What do you know about parental math? 24th Sunday C
A set of parents did the usual thing when their son moved away to college. The packed up the belongings. They drove halfway there and spent the night at the hotel laughing and telling stories.

What are you resolved to do in your life? 23rd Sun. C 2019
Funerals come in threes, or so it always seems. What amazed me about the recent trifecta of celebrations here at SJM was this – the length of time each one had been married. 55 years. 59 years. Just shy of 69 years. I mean, I didn’t think they let people who were 5 years old…

Have you ever been the ‘rowdy table’ at a wedding reception? 22nd C 2019
It was obvious early on in the reception that we were the rowdy table. It was a small venue and crowd, maybe 80 people. We were situated in the corner, perhaps in the hope that our presumed loudness and craziness would not be so noticeable

If St. Louis IX were to come back from the dead and visit the city named after him, what might he have to say to us? Aug. 25th, Feast of St. Louis IX
Besides being surprised if Louis IX, whose patronal feast day we celebrate today would appear walking the streets of St. Louis, I wonder what he would think of the city named in his honor?

On what do you keep your eyes fixed? 20th Sunday, 2019
Two reporters had an interesting conversation at the top of a skyscraper. They had been invited to cover the progress of these two huge buildings which were to be joined at the top by a crosswalk. They stood at the connecting I-beam, high above the city streets. One said, “I couldn’t imagine crawling across that.”

Do you like to gamble? 19th Sunday, Year C 2019
Almost all gambling starts with the words: “I bet”. And the wager is to risk something of value in the hopes of reaping something of greater value. I have been blessed by a temperament flaw that is not drawn to gambling. I’m cheap.
