This Lent season we welcome St. Justin parish community, school community and PSR community to join together to learn, reflect and act to address issues of poverty in our community.
Each week there will be a new theme to help deepen our faith and understanding. Each grade will have age-appropriate activities in the classroom that follows the topics. We ask that families consider reinforcing what is being taught at school and make this lent a time to deepen our faith. To assist in this, a calendar will be sent home each week in the Thursday folder.
The themes of the weeks are:
- The Catholic Social Teachings (March 4-8)
- Global poverty (March 11-15)
- Local poverty (March 25-29)
- Empathizing with those in poverty (April 1-5)
- Inspirational church figures working to alleviate poverty (April 8-12)
- Call to action (April 15-19)
The calendar will have three sections per day: education, reflection and an action. Use this calendar as a guide to facilitate discussion and action or as a guide to come up with your own activities to deepen your commitment to helping those in poverty through the lens of our Catholic faith.
In addition, for each weekly theme during our journey through Lent, each family is encouraged to participate in various challenges. A challenge activity could be to perform an act of kindness for someone or to conserve water at home by taking a short shower. Your family can also set Lenten challenges of your own. We’ve provided two options to help your family track their participation, but feel free to create your own as well. One suggestion is to cut up the Lent symbols sheet and have family members put one symbol into a family collection spot (perhaps a basket or bowl on the dining room or prayer table) each time a challenge activity challenge is completed. The other provided option is to color in one space on the stained glass coloring page each time a challenge
activity is completed.
We hope these challenges and the conversations they spark, in addition to the lessons and activities at school and throughout the parish, bring your family closer together and closer to God.
