As our nation celebrates 250 years of history, Catholics are reminded that participating in civic life is both a privilege and a responsibility. Voting is one important way we seek the common good and put our faith into action.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches:
“Submission to authority and co-responsibility for the common good make it morally obligatory to pay taxes, to exercise the right to vote, and to defend one’s country…” (CCC 2240)
Our Catholic faith should always shape the way we approach public life. As the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops reminds us, our identity as followers of Christ comes before any political party or affiliation. We are called to form our consciences according to the Gospel and to participate in civic life with charity, wisdom, and respect for the dignity of every person.
