Seven Churches Visitation

The Seven Churches Visitation is a Holy Thursday tradition where Catholics visit several churches to pray before the Blessed Sacrament at each altar of repose. This practice begins after the evening Mass when the Eucharist is moved to a special altar for adoration. It reflects Jesus’ request in the Garden of Gethsemane to “stay awake and pray.” Pilgrims often visit seven churches, remembering Christ’s journey from the Last Supper to His Passion, pausing at each church to reflect on Scripture and pray.

The tradition was started by St. Philip Neri in Rome and can be done alone or with others. It’s meant to be a quiet, prayerful walk with Jesus, especially fitting for families. Some adapt the practice by praying more than one station at a church or ending with a shared meal before midnight. The pilgrimage reminds Catholics that we are on a journey to God. Spending time with Christ in this way helps prepare our hearts for Good Friday and Easter.
