Congress passed the legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents’ Day and, on August 3, 1978, then-President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation. So this year we will celebrate our beloved Grandparents on their day, September 9. The role of Grandparent is so much more than just baking cookies, taking the grandkids fishing or occasionally babysitting. Many times grandparents today are much more involved in the lives of both their children and grandchildren. This can make for some wonderful memories, as well as some challenging times.
The Archdiocese of St. Louis has a wonderful list of resources aimed at helping and supporting today’s grandparents. There are books, blogs and articles to read, groups to join and websites to visit. Whether you are the primary caretaker of your grandchildren, spend weekends with them or anything in between, there is literature that can be of interest to you. Both practical and spiritual, the list is jam-packed with a variety of means by which we can become the best grandparents we can be.
